Born in Lusaka, Zambia, Kaluba is the fourth child in a family of seven siblings. Raised by her mother, Martha, after her father left, Kaluba's family faced financial struggles, with her mother working as a housemaid to make ends meet.

Bauleni Compound, where Kaluba lives with her family, is one of the most densely populated compounds in Lusaka. The compound is informal, overcrowded, facing severe poverty, and lacks essential social facilities, including recreational spaces for children. Many have settled in Bauleni because of cheap unplanned housing units, which have poor access to clean water and sanitation. There is also a high prevalence of HIV and AIDS in the area, resulting in a substantial population of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs) in Bauleni.

The SSHJM Bauleni Special Needs Project (BSNP) school has been operating since 1995 to provide inclusive education to children with special needs and vulnerable children in the area. The project also provides youth skills training in food production, general agriculture, carpentry and fashion design and textile technology.

Kaluba is enrolled at BSNP school where she had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, where she particularly excelled in women’s football. Beyond the school team, Kaluba showcased her talent in various tournaments, including representing Falls Way Elite Academy League and DON BOSCO FC. Her versatility in playing different positions earned her recognition as one of the best young talents in the team at a tournament in Kafue. Not only skilled in football, Kaluba also shines in traditional dancing, participating in cultural events at both local and national levels.

Kaluba's dedication and football skills led to her being selected for the National team for school children under 12, with the honour of representing Zambia at an international competition in South Africa. Despite her sporting and dance achievements, Kaluba remains focused on her education, supported by BSNP school.

In the words of Kaluba's mother, "She has achieved so much, and as a family, we thank BSNP for exposing her to sports, which has not only changed her life but also built her self-esteem." Kaluba dreams of playing for the Zambia National Women's team, aspiring to use her success to uplift her family and community.

Kaluba Phiri's journey is a testament to the power of sports and education, inspiring a positive future for young people in Bauleni. With determination and support, she continues to chase her dreams, proving that with dedication and commitment, anything is possible!
