Climate
and the Environment
Addressing the climate crisis is perhaps the most pressing challenge of our time. Those living in developing countries are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In response SSHJM have become increasingly active in supporting mitigation and adaptation. SSHJM build community resilience to the impacts of climate change and environmental damage and supports communities to protect their local environment.
About this theme
The increasingly variable weather patterns of increased rain and flooding and longer droughts have become an environmental and socio-economic problem which is increasingly causing climate-driven hazards to people around the world and especially in Africa and the Global South. The climate crisis is adversely affecting small-scale farming households in Africa and the Global South because their agricultural livelihoods depend on climate-regulated rainwater. The adverse effects of climate change and variability on crops and farm animals cannot be overstated, negatively impacting livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and well-being. SSHJM is also responding to Pope Francis Laudato Si call to listen to “the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor… and Care for Our Common Home”.
